We set our alarm for 7am this morning, but we didn’t really need to, since we left our curtains open overnight and saw the sunris through our windows. Breakfast was a big buffet that inlcuded breads baked in the shapes of animals and loaves that said “Tanzania Serena”.
We met Raphael at 8am for our game drive. The biggest event of the day happened almost immediately: we found a lioness in the crater eating the remains of a wildebeest she had killed overnight.

Not much was left when we got there, just the head, spine, ribs and legs. Lots of little jackals and hyenas were circling, waiting their turn to eat. One jackal in particular kept creeping up and trying to snatch a piece or two. He got a couple, but the hyenas would then chase him down and steal it away from him. At one point the jackal got almost an entire leg, and the lioness stole it back from him.

It was so entertaining to see the animals interact. We watched for about an hour as the lioness finished off her share of the wildebeest and then the other animals moved in to take theirs.

We saw lots of the same animals as yesterday, and right before lunch we also saw a pride of 7 lions: 1 male, 2 cubs, and 4 females. They started hunting another wildebeest but were biding their time, so we ate our Serena pack lunch (ham sandwich, roast chicken, cheese, pound cake, apple, banana, drink box, Dairy Milk bar and peanuts) while watching. No kill took place.

We got back to the lodge around 3pm, rested and had showers, and did laundry before going to the lounge for a drink before dinner.

We met Raphael for an hour to talk about our plans for the rest of the week, then had dinner at 8 before retiring to our room. Tomorrow we are moving on to the Serengeti!

Great post 🙂
