Trip Report: Costa Rica 2014 Day 1 – Detroit to San Jose

Thursday March 6, 2014

We left home at 10 a.m. to make it to the airport in time for our 3 pm flight. Because it was the start of March Break for Ontario schools, with Friday being a PA day, we expected our trip to be busy and have delays, both at the border crossing (we flew out of Detroit) and in the airport. It figures that we wold only have to wait behind one car at the border, and behind one person at the terminal to check in! I don’t think we’ve ever had such short waits before. We were through security in no time and had several hours to kill before our flight left.

We had a yummy lunch at Earl of Sandwich in the terminal, and then departed on time. We had a 2:10 layover in Miami, of which we lost about 20 minutes due to a headwind on the way down. It turns out that we needed all the time we had left, because the terminal is so large and our connection was at the opposite end. We made it down there, grabbed something fast to eat, but then sat around for a while as the second flight was delayed and no information was being communicated by American Airlines. Finally we took off close to 9 pm.

We made it into San Jose a little after 11 pm local time, and after clearing immigration and customs and waiting forever for our luggage, we found Wilson from Casa Marin waiting to drive us to the B&B for the night. The drive took less than ten minutes, and the owner, Jody, was waiting up for us when we got there. We checked into our spacious cabina and went right to sleep.
